The two-time Olympic gold medalist and WNBA star Brittney Griner, who has been detained in Russia for over five months, was found guilty on drug charges in a Moscow-area court Thursday. She was then sentenced to nine years in prison.
President Biden quickly condemned the sentence saying “Today, American citizen Brittney Griner received a prison sentence that is one more reminder of what the world already knew: Russia is wrongfully detaining Brittney,” He also is quoted saying “release her immediately.”
Her sentence will be appealed and the US government will continue its efforts to get her released. They have reportedly considered swapping Griner for armed dealer Viktor Bout
