A 36-year-old Fort Myers man was killed Sunday afternoon in Hardee County after losing control of his SUV on U.S. 17, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers say the crash occurred on November 23rd around 4:30 p.m., approximately 1.6 miles south of Sweetwater Road. The driver was heading south in a 2002 Chevy TrailBlazer when investigators say he was traveling at a high rate of speed while maneuvering around other vehicles. The SUV left the roadway, entered the grass median, rotated clockwise, and overturned multiple times.
During the rollover, the driver was ejected from the vehicle. Hardee County EMS pronounced him deceased on scene. FHP confirmed next of kin has been notified. The report notes the driver was wearing a helmet, but there was no applicable seatbelt or restraint use due to the type of vehicle condition at the time of the crash.
The Florida Highway Patrol Traffic Homicide Unit is continuing its investigation.
This information was released Monday afternoon by Senior Trooper Kenneth R. Watson of Florida Highway Patrol Troop F.
