Distracted Driving Leads to Serious Motorcycle Crash in Tampa

A moment of distraction behind the wheel led to a serious motorcycle crash Saturday morning in Hillsborough County, highlighting once again the deadly consequences of inattentive driving on Florida roads.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 11:05 a.m. on October 4, 2025, along U.S. 41 near Newberger Road. A 46-year-old woman from New Port Richey was driving a Honda Accord southbound when she became distracted while checking her GPS.
Ahead of her, a 64-year-old Tampa man was riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle in the same lane. FHP investigators say the driver of the Accord failed to slow down and collided with the motorcycle from behind.
The impact threw the rider from his motorcycle, causing serious injuries. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The sedan came to a controlled stop following the crash.
Sergeant Steve Gaskins, Public Affairs Officer for the Florida Highway Patrol, confirmed that the incident remains under investigation.
This latest crash adds to Florida’s growing problem of distracted driving, which remains one of the leading causes of serious and fatal traffic crashes across the state. Despite repeated campaigns and legislative efforts to curb phone use behind the wheel, troopers continue to report hundreds of similar incidents each year — many of which end in tragedy.
As technology becomes increasingly integrated into vehicles, law enforcement and safety advocates warn that even brief distractions, like checking a GPS, can carry devastating consequences.
