Ocala, FL (June 19, 2025) — A cargo train derailment in Ocala is causing the temporary closure of a major roadway Thursday afternoon, though fortunately no injuries or hazardous material releases have been reported.
At approximately 2:20 p.m., five cars of a CSX freight train derailed near the 500 block of NW 10th Street, according to the Florida Division of Emergency Management. The incident prompted an immediate response from the Ocala Police Department, who confirmed that no injuries or environmental hazards occurred as a result of the derailment.
Officials said there was no visible damage to the train cars or track infrastructure, and there were no fuel spills or chemical releases involved. The derailment occurred just east of the intersection of SR-492 and N. Magnolia Avenue.
As a precaution, Ocala Police shut down a portion of SR-492 to traffic while CSX crews responded with a crane to conduct remediation efforts. The cleanup is expected to last at least five hours, according to updates received from state and local officials shortly after the incident.
Despite the closure of SR-492, major highways such as US-441 and US-27 remain open and unaffected by the derailment. No state-level assistance has been requested at this time, and the cause of the incident is still unknown.
Residents and commuters in the area are advised to seek alternate routes due to the extended road closure.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office issued an internal advisory to staff around 3:00 p.m., warning of the traffic impacts and estimated closure timeframe.
The derailment is being handled entirely at the local level, with CSX leading cleanup operations and Ocala PD managing traffic control.
The incident remains under investigation.
