Sumter County, Fla. (June 2, 2025) – A 38-year-old man from Summerfield was killed in a violent two-vehicle crash Sunday evening along US-301, south of SE 180th Street, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The collision occurred at approximately 6:05 p.m. when a southbound Volkswagen Jetta, reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed, attempted to pass a Dodge Charger also heading south in the inside travel lane. The Charger, driven by a 51-year-old Ocala man, was struck when the Jetta attempted to overtake it and sideswiped the front right corner of the vehicle.

The impact sent both vehicles into the center median. Troopers say the Jetta flipped multiple times before coming to rest, ejecting the driver in the process. He was pronounced deceased on the scene. FHP noted the man was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The driver of the Charger and his 51-year-old female passenger, both from Ocala, sustained minor injuries and were treated on scene.

Florida Highway Patrol’s Traffic Homicide Unit is actively investigating the crash. Troopers have not released the names of those involved pending next of kin notification.

FHP urges all drivers to obey speed limits, wear seatbelts, and avoid aggressive driving behaviors that too often lead to tragic outcomes like this.
