Suspect in Custody After Violent Attack at Boulder Outdoor Mall

Must Read

BOULDER, Colo. – Chaos erupted Sunday afternoon in downtown Boulder when several people were injured in what the FBI is calling a “targeted terror attack” at a popular outdoor pedestrian mall. The incident occurred near Pearl Street, a well-known shopping and dining area frequented by tourists, students, and residents.

The attack unfolded around 3:30 p.m. Mountain Standard Time (Colorado local time), prompting a large emergency response. According to Boulder Police Chief Steve Redfearn, officers responded swiftly after receiving emergency calls reporting a shirtless man assaulting bystanders. At least some of the victims appeared to have been set on fire, though officials have not released specific details about the nature or number of injuries.

A disturbing image shared on social media shows the suspect shirtless, wearing sunglasses and jeans, holding what appears to be an incendiary object, moments before being apprehended. The man was taken into custody at the scene without further violence.

“It would be irresponsible for me to speculate on motive this early on,” Chief Redfearn said during a press conference Sunday evening. “We are actively interviewing witnesses and working closely with federal partners.”

The FBI has confirmed its involvement and stated that preliminary information suggests the assault was premeditated and targeted.

At the time of the attack, a peaceful demonstration was being held nearby by members of Run For Their Lives, a global volunteer organization advocating for the release of hostages held in Gaza. While it is unclear if there is any connection between the event and the attack, the group’s presence added to the number of people in the vicinity during the violent outburst.

Emergency responders treated multiple victims on the scene, with some transported to local hospitals. Their conditions have not yet been disclosed.
