TALLAHASSEE, FL – Governor Ron DeSantis has signed House Bill 6025 into law, effectively repealing automatic restrictions on firearms and ammunition during declared local emergencies in Florida. The bill, which took immediate effect upon signing on May 28, 2025, removes provisions that previously prohibited the sale, display, and public possession of firearms and ammunition during emergencies such as riots or widespread public disturbances.
The Senate companion to this legislation, Senate Bill 952, was introduced by Senator Blaise Ingoglia (R-Hernando County). SB 952 passed through all Senate committees with favorable votes but was ultimately laid on the table in favor of HB 6025, which became the vehicle for the legislative change.
Polk County Delegation’s Votes
All members of Polk County’s legislative delegation supported the repeal:
Florida House of Representatives:
Rep. Jon Albert (R-48): Voted Yes Rep. Jennifer Canady (R-50): Voted Yes Rep. Jennifer Kincart Jonsson (R-49): Voted Yes Rep. Josie Tomkow (R-51): Voted Yes
Florida Senate:
Sen. Colleen Burton (R-12): Voted Yes Sen. Ben Albritton (R-27): Voted Yes
Senator Colleen Burton represents District 12, which includes part of Polk County, while Senator Ben Albritton serves as Senate President and represents District 27, encompassing portions of Polk County.
Legislative Intent and Reactions
Supporters of the bill argue that it safeguards Second Amendment rights during times when public safety resources may be strained. Opponents, however, express concern that removing these restrictions could lead to increased violence during already volatile situations.
HB 6025 was part of a trio of bills signed by Governor DeSantis on May 28, 2025. The other two bills focused on animal welfare: CS/SB 150 addresses the abandonment of restrained dogs during natural disasters, and CS/HB 255 increases penalties for aggravated animal cruelty.
