Must Read

Roberta Flack, the legendary singer renowned for her soulful renditions of “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” and “Killing Me Softly with His Song,” passed away on February 24, 2025, at the age of 88. Her publicist confirmed that she died peacefully at her home, surrounded by family.

Born Roberta Cleopatra Flack on February 10, 1937, in Black Mountain, North Carolina, she was raised in a musical household that nurtured her prodigious talents. Flack’s early exposure to church music and gospel greats like Mahalia Jackson and Sam Cooke profoundly influenced her musical journey. A classically trained pianist, she earned a full scholarship to Howard University, where she honed her craft.

Flack’s ascent to stardom began in the late 1960s when she was discovered performing in Washington, D.C. clubs. Her breakthrough came when Clint Eastwood featured her rendition of “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” in his 1971 film “Play Misty for Me,” propelling the song to the top of the charts and earning her a Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1973. She made history by becoming the first solo artist to win the same award in consecutive years, clinching it again in 1974 for “Killing Me Softly with His Song.”

Throughout her illustrious career, Flack’s emotive voice and sophisticated style transcended musical genres, leaving an indelible mark on soul, R&B, and jazz. She collaborated with artists such as Donny Hathaway and Peabo Bryson, producing timeless duets that resonated with audiences worldwide. Her influence extended beyond her recordings; she was a trailblazer who broke barriers for African American women in the music industry.

In later years, Flack faced health challenges, including a stroke in 2016 and a diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2022, which made it impossible for her to sing. Despite these obstacles, her passion for music remained undiminished. Just days before her passing, she expressed gratitude to Celine Dion for covering “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” showcasing her enduring appreciation for fellow artists.

Roberta Flack’s legacy is one of unparalleled artistry and emotional depth. Her music continues to inspire and captivate, ensuring that her voice will echo through generations to come.
